A Brief History of the Musicians Institute – College of Contemporary Music

The Musicians Institute (MI) – College of Contemporary Music is one of the most respected music colleges in our country. The college started as an idea all the way back in 1977, when it first opened its doors as the Guitar Institute of Technology (GIT). In those days, it was actually the only school in the country of its kind. Nowhere else could students take part in an experience-based, practical education system that focused on contemporary music. The program was nothing short of innovative and had been developed in fully by Pat Hicks and Howard Roberts. The two friends looked for the country’s best player educators and were able, in so doing, to start a tradition that lives on today. The tradition is that students are educated using a unique mixture of professional, educational and creative talent.

The School Develops

One year after GIT opened its doors, the school also added the Bass Institute of Technology (BIT). And then, two years after that in 1980, the Percussion Institute of Technology (PIT) was also added. The school continued to develop and, in 1987, the Vocal Institute of Technology (VIT) was also added. The school, by now, was huge and able to provide tuition to a wide range of different musicians. The different schools started to be referred to as the Musicians Institute and the experts across the country started to see it as a truly innovative school that provided some of the highest quality contemporary music education. The school, based right in the heart of the country’s entertainment industry – Hollywood Boulevard – started to attract global students as well. Today, still from its fantastic location on Hollywood Boulevard, the school is a true international community of creative professionals and musicians.

The school continue to expand, however, and by the 1990s, the MI created more programs that allowed them to keep up with the rapidly changing face of the modern music industry. In 1991, the Keyboard Institute of Technology (KIT) opened its doors. Two years later, the Recording Institute of Technology (RIT) was added. In 1994, the first bachelor’s degree program, the Bachelor of Music, was offered at the school. This bachelor’s program includes digital recording, artist development and music business school. The same year, the Guitar Craft Academy (GCA) was also started, where students can learn how to maintain and build electrical guitars and basses. Then, in 2002, the school launched its Music Business Program (MBP), where musicians and non-musicians alike can learn about the business element of the music industry.

The school decided to integrate all of the different programs into the College of Contemporary Music. They mow offer the School of Performance Studies, where students can learn about a variety of instruments; and the School of Entertainment Industry Studies, which looks more at craft and business. The school, just like music, will always continue to develop and if sufficient interest is expressed for a certain discipline, it will surely be added to the curriculum.
