  • The market: Have you conducted market research to see what else is already on offer? Your business needs to stand out from the crowd, offering people something that is unique and exciting but most of all, something that they actually want.
  • Money: Do you have the finances in place to support your business ideas? Running out of money during the set up and launch of your business would spell disaster and if you require additional funding, be sure to secure it beforehand. You could opt for traditional methods like a bank loan or choose from something less conventional, depending on what is right for your needs.
  • The future: When starting a business, particularly one in the ever expanding food and drink industry, it is important to remember how quickly the market can change and that you must always be prepared to adapt to consumer wants or react to new competition. No business will succeed in the long term if it cannot be allowed to grow.
  • Experience: With so many food jobs now in existence, the possibilities of where to focus your endeavours are endless. Direct experience within the industry will give you an insight into the workings of your particular area of interest and set you up with the skills and know-how to make your own business a success.
  • Business matters: A love of food and a passion for cooking will go a long way when starting your own business but it won’t be enough on its own. You have to accept that a business is a business and some form of experience, training or guidance in such formal matters will be invaluable.
  • Legality: Do you have all the paperwork you require to operate? Many countries, states and regions outline their own specific rules and regulations with regards to the selling of food or alcohol and you must ensure you have all the necessary certificates, licences or permits before you begin trading.
  • Equipment: Cooking at home is one matter; cooking in a professional or commercial kitchen is another. You must be sure that you have all the equipment you will need to cope with the high levels of production your business hopes to encounter.
  • Help: Running a business is difficult and often stressful and you should never be afraid to ask for help. Be it through the hiring of additional members of staff, consulting a financial advisor on monetary issues or turning to your loved ones for moral support in tough times; surrounding yourself with helpful people will maximise your chance of success.
